This fascinating country in the African east is a big place. The scope of a visit here can take in all manner of avenues – historical, zoological, anthropological, biological, the list goes on. Luxury vacations to Ethiopia can give visitors the best of all worlds, with travel guides that connect you to all the must-see attractions and top activities, including the best times to visit and essential tips for experiencing an unforgettable journey.
Witness incredible wildlife
With such a wealth of Ethiopia tourist destinations to consider, many start with their animal checklist. Safari in Ethiopia can take on an enormous scope. It’s different than other typical African regions – there are no lions or elephants in the grasslands of Ethiopia, but you will find Gelada baboons and raptors in the Simien Mountains, and the endemic Ethiopian wolf in the Sanetti Plateau and the Bale Mountains. Crocodiles and hippos will wallow in the waters near the landmark stops of Lake Tana, noted for its biodiversity.
The Rift Valley, which runs right through the middle of the country, north to south, is home to many of the world’s largest lakes and contains many of the country’s wildlife parks.
Engage with the northlands
The country’s massive Amhara Region has the most world heritage sites of any region in Ethiopia, including the Rock Hewn Churches of Lalibela, whose medieval monoliths attract countless pilgrims. The region is also endowed with a multitude of natural and geographic wonders and ecosystems, the national parks home to many endangered endemic animals. The geography contributes to the ecological isolation of the wildlife here as well.
The country’s most active volcano, Erta Ale, is also in the north, located in the Danakil Depression on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Its last eruption stopped in March 2020, with the ashes only recently dying down.
Ethiopia’s Oromia Region contains the nation’s capital, Addis Ababa. Visitors to this fascinating city enjoy the neo baroque architecture and the engaging art museums, filled with both contemporary art, traditional works and prehistoric fossils.
Speaking of which, the Omo Valley in the southwest is famous for its fossils and archaeological findings. Stone tools and hominid fossils relating to human evolution found in the region date back tens of thousands of years, right to the Ice Age.
