Ecotourism at its finest. Rwanda captivates with mountain gorillas, tropical rainforests, wilderness safaris, and absolutely mesmerizing culture.
Safe and welcoming, Rwanda has recovered both economically and culturally since the civil war of the 1990s.
With the Virunga Mountain chain anchoring its northwest corner, Rwanda is without a doubt most famous for the fascinating mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park, made famous by conservationist Dian Fossey. Gorilla trekking here is elevated by hiking through bamboo forests and wild meadows, and by the chance to also see the rare golden monkey.
Over in the east, Akagera National Park presents an opportunity to see the Big Five – the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and African buffalo. The variety at Akagera encourages this mammal diversity, comprising savannah, wetlands and lakes, dense forest, and low mountains. At Nyungwe Forest National Park down in the southwest corner, chimpanzees are the big draw. This protected rainforest is actually filled with different primates, making it one of Rwanda’s most important regions for biodiversity.
In Kigali, Rwanda's capital, visitors plan for a half-day at the intensely moving Kigali Genocide Memorial to understand more about this disturbing part of the country’s past, taking in its many displays and a garden of reflection. The Rwanda Art Museum has a variety of exhibits of contemporary art, as does the Inema Arts Center, which focuses on modern interpretations of traditional art. For souvenirs, take in the Kimironko Market, Kigali’s biggest and busiest, and the Nyamirambo Women’s Center, a small boutique filled with ethically-made goods.
Rwanda’s best-kept secret is Lake Kivu, part of the African Great Lakes, featuring some of the best inland beaches on the continent.
