Ask The Experts: Africa

By Tully Luxury Travel | 01-28-2020 |

Safari Africa Tanzania

For this Edition, we talked to Tully Luxury Travel execs Jacquelyn Stoeckle (Director, Global Initiatives ) and Alexandria Allen (Director, Business Development) about their recent safari in Tanzania visiting 3 different Singita luxury lodges.

It was Alexandria’s first time, whereas Jacquelyn worked at Singita for 10 years. We were curious about their adventure. How was Alexandria’s experience? Would Jacquelyn still enjoy it after working there for so many years? What tips could they offer?

Here’s what they had to say.

ALEXANDRIA, WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING, AND HOW DID THE REALITY DIFFER?
I’ve always preferred city vacations, and I worried about being bored. I was pleasantly surprised to find there were plenty of things to do. I could play tennis, workout, visit with local communities. There was a lot to keep me busy.”

WERE THE CAMPS WHAT YOU EXPECTED?
I didn’t think our rooms would be so luxurious. They had all the comforts of home and then some.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT?
Spending an hour with a massive pride of lions. There were 24: eight adult females, two adult males, and 14 cubs. One female walked right up to the vehicle! My heart stopped.

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING SO CLOSE TO THE LION?
Wondering, do these predators see me as prey? Will they jump into the vehicle? But I relaxed when I saw Jacquelyn wasn’t concerned and saw how knowledgeable our guide was about animal behavior.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR SAFARI?
I loved the community tour. We visited a local village, and everyone was so welcoming. Seeing how happy they were yet having so little puts life in perspective.

JACQUELYN, HOW WAS IT FOR YOU GOING BACK TO AFRICA AFTER WORKING THERE FOR 10 YEARS?
It was fun to see Africa through Alexandria’s eyes. We saw the wildebeest migration. It was my 7th, and no wildlife spectacle can match it. It’s not something I could ever get tired of.

DID ANYTHING SURPRISE YOU?
I saw things on our game drives I’ve never seen before, even though I lived there for years. I was impressed our guide showed us new things every day, explored different areas of the reserve, it really is ever-changing.

ANY TIPS YOU TWO HAVE FOR A FIRST-TIME SAFARI-GOER?
Jacquelyn: Most guests are wound up when they first arrive. Usually from misconceptions about the experience. Don’t be afraid to talk to your travel agent before you go if you are uneasy about anything. That’s the great thing about Tully, our Travel Designers have been on safaris themselves, so they know what it is like. Trust in the staff and your guide, their number one priority is your safety.

Alexandria: Before I went, I was worried I’d have to buy a “safari” wardrobe. It’s not that way at all. Wear what you wear at home. Be comfortable.

Jacquelyn: Remember, you’re on the equator. Bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Also, pack a jacket or fleece. It can be chilly at night, even if it’s hot during the day.

Alexandria and Jacquelyn visited the following Singita lodges:
Sasakwa Lodge | Faru Faru Lodge | Sabora Tented Camp (Breakfast)
