As with all travel plans, a look at the weather is a key factor in deciding when to travel to England.
And while England has a rainy reputation, there will indeed be sunshine for you to enjoy, depending on the months you choose.
Consider visiting during the “shoulder seasons.”
The best time to go to England in General is from May to September. This is the stretch that is mostly guaranteed to be hot and dry. But the notoriously fickle weather in the United Kingdom is always a riddle, one that no one ever tires of talking about.
During July and August, with children out of school all over the world, the crowds heave in certain places, making for long lineups at major attractions and busy, busy streetcorners. If this is the only time you have to travel, prepare yourself for this inevitability.
During the shoulder seasons – May and June, and September and October – the landmarks and museums are all easier to get into. The children are all in school, the roads are not as jammed with vehicles and the train cars are quieter. In general, this is likely how England looks to you in your mind already.
May and June in England can be terrific months to visit, particularly if you relish the coming of spring, with all the newness that season can bring – gardens ready to bloom, a freshness to the air. On the other side of the seasonal coin, you may also want to consider “fireplace season,” when the environment is more cozy. You might throw on a jacket, feel the mist in your hair in the country hillsides and pull up to a fireplace in the sitting room. This is most ideal from September to November, while average temperatures are still high enough to allow for outdoor amusements and sporting events.
Although England is very busy in July and August, there’s always a silver lining, if you’re wanting to spend time in the Cotswolds cottage country, for example, the summertime weather is perfect, often with the least rain. Plus, you are actually able to swim in the lakes and streams during the summer. The season to be outdoors, like many of those in North America, is surprisingly short.
Winter in England is particularly festive
The U.K. sees the fewest tourists in November and January through March. The weather is often more dreary and wet than at other times – October to January is the wettest – and these are also the coldest months. That said, visitors in December are treated to the run-up to the holiday seasonal, which includes the traditional Christmas markets. Street decorations at this time of the year are also taken up a notch from what you might experience at home, with lights ablaze absolutely everywhere you go, often from December to February.
Whatever season you end up planning your trip to London or deciding when to visit Oxford, be assured that the experts at Tully Luxury Travel are there to make your journey as smooth as silk, offering practical advice on the best time of the year to visit England.
