Best Time of the Year to Visit Greece

By Tully Luxury Travel | 04-17-2024 |

An Insider's Look Private Travel Athens Greece Mykonos Santorini

Any time is the perfect time to explore Greece – to experience the incredible sunshine, the crystal-clear waters, the traditional Greek food and the glamorous yachting life of the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors to the mainland and the Greek Islands are always very moved by the immense history to engage with, whatever part of the region you visit. Yet while this is a year-round destination for luxury vacations to Greece, there are a few things to keep in mind.

The best season to visit Greece

When it comes right down to it, April, May and October are the best months to visit Greece. Whether it’s vacations in Athens, a luxury trip to Santorini or a beach-specific trip to Mykonos, these shoulder seasons are the most ideal periods. The islands in particular are best in late-spring, early-summer or at the beginning of fall. You will experience great prices, fewer people – all the children will be in school – and excellent weather, with ambient temperatures hovering around 70 to 75º F with a very agreeable sea temperature, too.

Visiting Greece during the summer

If you are taking family along and summer is the only time you can get away, high season from June to September can still be an incredible adventure. Greece peak season – particularly July and August – promises summer heat, with an 85º F average high that is augmented with high humidity. Many people visit Greece specifically for this reason, so they can relax in the sun and cool off with a refreshing ocean dip.

As well, can expect maybe three or four days of rain in the whole month of July. Keep in mind that six million people can and have visited Greece in August alone, which sounds like revelry at its maximum, but could be problematic if you’re not into crowds. Athens and the Cycladic islands are the most crowded and the most expensive during this time.

A change of pace in the winter

Winter is the best time to have Greece all to yourself in certain spots. Temperatures range from 50 to 55º F, and you can expect a few periods of rain, but bundling up is not a huge deal. With almost no one to bother you, you’ll be able to experience Greece like a local. This is a great time to visit the shops and galleries in Athens – the stores will be filled with bargains and the museums will be having their slow periods. Flights to Greece will be less expensive at this time, too.

Consider that the Christmas season can get a bit busy. The same goes for the March break and Greek Orthodox Easter time periods. Bear in mind that many hotels are closed for the winter, and some tourist activities will not be available or will keep much shorter hours.

Let Tully Luxury Travel get you there

A trip to Greece is always a good idea! Northern Greece in particular is trending at the moment. Whatever part of the year you can fit Greece into your calendar, whether this is your first time or your 15th, the Tully Travel Designers can come through with a multitude of itineraries across Greece and beyond. Say, you could also stay as long as you like and experience this fascinating country across multiple seasons, getting a real feel for the place – a definite point to ponder.
