If you’ve been putting it off, by all means take the plunge. Discover the allure of a trip to Marrakesh to experience the bustling souks, historic sites, local flavors and fascinating mix of cultures. Finding the best things to do in Marrakesh will take careful planning, but the Tully Travel Designers will have everything set out for you. All you have to do is let it roll out.
Luxury vacations to Morocco have a way of getting under your skin so much that you want to bring it all home with you – the feeling, the mystery, the romance, the artisanal goods, the enticing smells! Visiting Marrakech brings a whirlwind of traditional Moroccan culture and the aromas of the market stalls filled with delicious Moroccan food.
Tully Luxury Travel has many ideas for itineraries across Morocco, but let’s walk you through the famed city of Marrakesh first.
One of the city’s more famous symbols, the Almohad-style Koutoubia Mosque has played a role in the religious life of Marrakesh since the 12th century. It’s lush gardens in the middle of town offer a welcome break from the street. Offset this with a stop at nearby gathering spot Jemaa El-Fnaa, also a busy cultural landmark, filled with markets and food stalls and street performers.
Two palaces should be on your list: the ruins of 16th-century Badi Palace, it’s orange orchard still standing and reflection pools still visible, and the intricately designed and decorated 16th-century Bahia Palace, a large 160-room masterpiece with eight acres of gardens to explore.
More gardens await at Jardin Majorelle by artist Jacques Majorelle, which is filled with exotic plants and water features. This is the location of the Berber Museum exploring the culture and history of Morocco’s heritage. In the same area, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the famed French fashion designer and his partner Pierre Bergé.
Your Tully Travel Designer will be able to ascertain how many days you need to see the sights of this glorious city, but take your time – there is more to come.
The 12th-century Ben Youssef Madrasa mosque is a major landmark, a beautiful example of 14th-century Islamic architecture with stunning tilework, and wood and plaster carvings. It was once one of the largest theological universities in North Africa. Rediscovered in 1917, the Saadian Tombs date back to the late 16th century, and present an example of Saadian dynasty architecture – an important historical era for Morocco. The tombs are decorated with marble and elaborate carvings and colorful tiles.
There is always time for a day trip
Your Tully Travel Designer can create an agenda that suits all interests and mobilities, but be encouraged to leave time for the Atlas Mountains. A day trip here will lend magic to this luxury vacation in so many ways – a camel trek, a magical dinner, and a newfound appreciation for the desert and all its mysteries.
