Discovering Tofo, Mozambique

While African safari adventure is the main draw for visitors traveling to eastern Africa, smart travel advisors know well that getting in a little beach time, too, strikes a nice balance.
Little wonder, then, that luxury vacations to Mozambique include a few days at Tofo Beach in southeastern Mozambique. Well-known for its curved shoreline, crystal-clear water, extensive marine life and laid-back vibe, Tofo Beach is so much more than just a popular tourist hotspot.
Become one with the water
And as you might expect, holiday life here is anchored to the sunny beach and surrounding coral reefs. Scuba diving is a real drawing card, attracting divers from all over the world, who come to sink deep into their underwater adventures filled with incredible reef fish, sea turtles and even the whale sharks. Visitors can even go snorkeling with these gentle creatures, considered the most safe encounter with a large animal in the world.
The region is also noted for great surfing, the waves consistent and the water warm. The environment is varied, creating opportunities for both beginner and experienced surfers to feel safe and challenged when they catch a wave.
Make time for a boat ride
Kayaking the mangroves near Tofo is a pastime enjoyed by all ages. The serenity of paddling the calm waters, getting in touch with the local ecosystem and witnessing various bird species in their natural habitat is second to none. More waves and even more diverse marine life can be found on Tofo’s ocean safaris. Boat tours deliver dolphins, turtles and humpback whales during migration season.
Take a break from the beach
When it comes time to actually put on a pair of shoes, wander the town to explore the local markets and immerse yourself in the local culture. Outdoor markets and food stalls reveal the real Tofo. Taste your way through the food markets and find the perfect souvenir at one of the artisanal craft shops.
A day trip to the nearby historic town of Inhambane is like a step into the region’s colonial past, its narrow streets and charming cafés the epitome of enchantment. This is one of the oldest settlements in the country, with parts of it dating back to the 11th century.
Sink into the sunset
Once the sunscreen has been washed off for the day, take your cue from the horizon and settle into the oranges, pinks and purples that signal the end of the day in Tofo. As the sun dips below the water, hopefully you will have a drink in hand to enjoy it. Then comes time to sit down to some of the freshest seafood you will have ever experienced. The fish and prawns and calamari at the Tofo beachside restaurants are satisfying beyond belief. Live music at one of the rustic beach bars is next on the agenda, followed by the most sound sleep you’ve ever had.
The Tully Travel Designers can easily combine your visit to Kruger National Park or the Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa with a stop at Tofo, or anchor it to trips to Zimbabwe or other itineraries across Mozambique.
Wherever else you’re headed, know that Tofo is waiting to show you an extremely pleasant time.
