Mandarin Oriental embodies classic luxury and timeless service; it is a brand synonymous with opulence. Their city hotels are typically in either historically significant or grandiose buildings, such as the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, enhancing the grandeur and elevating client expectations. The aesthetic and architectural allure of their properties consistently leave clients in awe, and fortunately, the service consistently meets or exceeds those high standards.
Resort or City Hotel: A Delightful Dilemma
Mandarin began with iconic city hotels and continues to elevate older properties with renovations. The Mandarin Oriental Tokyo is one of my personal favorites – its iconic bar has a sensual atmosphere, and trust me, there is nothing better than sitting back after a long day exploring Tokyo and enjoying a signature cocktail while live jazz sets the mood. I should also note that their breakfast buffet is second to none, a hallmark across Mandarin properties, offering an array of oriental breakfast delicacies. Who can resist Dim Sum in the morning?
In saying that, Mandarin resorts are often just as awe-inspiring as their city counterparts. A new addition, the Mandarin Oriental Costa Navarino in Greece has swiftly secured its place as one of my favorite European retreats. What sets it apart is that it's not merely about style (the modernist architecture would take your breath away), substance reigns supreme. Unlike many newly-opened resorts that must iron out a couple of kinks, Costa Navarino has defied the norm, hitting the ground running.
Each room in the property offers uninterrupted sea views, and their commitment to service transcends your average expectations for a 5-star resort. Costa Navarino is a noteworthy addition to the Mandarin portfolio and one of my top recommendations for clients looking for their next summer beach getaway.
Personal Paradise: Mandarin Oriental Luzern
If I had to pick my favorite property, it would be the Mandarin Oriental Luzern. This architectural gem, reminiscent of the Belle Époque and dating back to the early 20th century, has undergone renovations that seamlessly meld its historic roots with modern sophistication.
The result is a lakeside treasure that, while transformed into a sublimely modern hotel, miraculously preserves its palatial essence due to careful design choices. Beyond aesthetics, the hotel is effortlessly enticing, with smiling doormen and warm welcomes at the front desk. First impressions are key!
The concierge team goes above and beyond, offering supreme assistance. They take the time to guide you through dining and activity options, and rest assured, they have an answer to any question you may pose. While this level of service might seem standard in 5-star hotels, I've found that concierge experiences can vary widely. Here, however, the team stands out, excelling in providing personalized suggestions and making an effort to understand you as an individual.
The Food and Beverage department is equally impressive – the bar team not only recalls your favorite drink and food choices but, most importantly, your name. For the more adventurous travelers, complimentary paddle boards are at your disposal, and the door men are more than willing to assist by carrying them over to the lake.
There is a quintessential charm to this property, the location speaks for itself. While relatively new to the Mandarin portfolio, the hotel has swiftly established itself as a stalwart in a lakeside town renowned for its Grand Dame hotels.
