Quark Expeditions: Emperor Penguins at Snow Hill
By Tully Luxury Travel | 05-18-2023 |
They have always been the consummate polar pioneers. Quark Expeditions made the first-ever visit to the remote emperor penguin colony near Snow Hill Island, Antarctica , in 2004, putting their many years of polar expertise to work among the icebergs in the Weddell Sea. This legendary rookery, with about 8,000 breeding pairs of emperor penguins, delivers one of the most exclusive wildlife experiences in the world. And now, intrepid travelers can set sail to do it once more, thanks to the return of the iconic Quark Snow Hill itineraries in November 2023.
Aboard Quark icebreaker the Ultramarine, guests fly to the edge of the Snow Hill emperor penguin colony via the ship’s two twin-engine helicopters, then walk across the thick sea ice to stand within just a few feet of these magnificent creatures and their chicks.
It’s like March of the Penguins and Frozen Planet.
The tallest and heaviest of the penguin species, endemic to Antarctica, the emperor penguins are noted for their pale yellow breasts and bright yellow ear patches surrounding black faces. They can stay under water for about 20 minutes, diving up to 1,750 feet, and typically live about 20 years. You’ll find yourself watching for hours, amazed by their behaviour, which can be quite comical as they cavort, caw and coo, sliding on their bellies down into the sea.
The route takes you on a flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, where you embark to cross the Drake Passage and edge into the Weddell Sea at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Guests choose from two 14-day voyages to spend five days in the Snow Hill area, visiting the penguin colony and enjoying the bespoke Weddell Sea experiences.
Enjoy total polar-exploring luxury.
