By Tully Luxury Travel | 09-06-2024 |
When it comes to Kenya main attractions and luxury vacations to Kenya, there is no shortage of game reserves, wildlife conservancies or national parks – this fascinating country in East Africa has this and so much more, including white-sand beaches and the dazzling coral reefs of the Indian Ocean.
Witness out-of-this world wildlife
In the Samburu National Reserves in the north central part of the country, you will find the Big Five – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo – but also the Samburu Special Five – Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx and the gerenuk, which is like a giraffe-gazelle. This rugged landscape also has more than 450 species of birds. The Ewaso Ng’iro River is the glue that hold the region together, filled with elephants and crocodiles. Samburu villagers here are happy to introduce you to their culture.
In the very south of the country, Amboseli National Park teems with wildlife. The region is noted for its large herds of elephants and 400 species of birds. Stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest peak – loom overhead. Visitors on safari in Kenya also visit a Maasai village to learn about their unique way of life.
Recharge the batteries at the beach
Kenya is not all tramping about or roaming the rugged environments in jeeps. The Lamu Archipelago on the east coast lays the Indian Ocean at your feet. Go for a rest, then take in the Swahili architecture and rich cultural heritage of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the nearby islands of Manda, Pate and Kiwayu by traditional dhow boat, or visit the 19th-century Lamu Fort to learn more about the history of the region.
The turquoise waters at Diani Beach in the south of the country is ready with all manner of watersports. The hinterland is also intriguing, including the Shima Hills National Reserve and the Shimoni Caves of Wasini Island. You will also find ongoing animal conservation efforts to engage with in this part of Kenya.
Take time for the capital city
Nairobi brings a blend of urban and natural attraction, where visitors can learn about Kenya’s diverse ethnic groups through traditional dance and music. You can tour the home of the author of Out of Africa, Karen Blixen – a museum showcases her work and life. Make time for the Nairobi National Park to see lions, giraffes, zebras and rhinos in their natural habitat with the city skyline in the background.
